The Vegan America Daily Update 🌱

Most Toothpastes Aren’t Vegan – Here’s Why 🦷😱

This might surprise you: most mainstream toothpastes are not vegan. Popular brands like Colgate, Crest, and Sensodyne are not vegan-friendly - they either contain animal-derived ingredients, are tested on animals, or both.

One of the most common non-vegan ingredients is glycerin, which gives toothpaste its smooth, moist texture. Unless labeled as plant-based, glycerin is often sourced from animal fat. Many mainstream brands use this without clarifying its origin.

Another hidden ingredient? Beeswax. While not found in all toothpaste, it’s frequently used in other oral care products like floss and mouthguards for coating or structural purposes. Since beeswax comes directly from animals, it is not vegan. You may also find propolis (a bee resin), calcium phosphate (sometimes sourced from bones), and flavorings or colorings that are animal-derived.

Let’s not forget - it’s not just about ingredients - it’s also about testing. Many major brands still engage in animal testing, either directly or through third parties, especially when selling in countries that require it.

So if you’re using conventional oral care products, chances are they don’t align with a fully vegan lifestyle.

That’s why at Vegan America, we’ve created a dedicated Vegan Oral Care collection - a curated lineup of 100% vegan, cruelty-free products including toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, and eco-friendly brushes. No beeswax, no animal testing, no animal-derived anything - just clean ingredients and ethical standards.
