A Vegan 4th of July - Honoring Freedom with Compassion

As America prepares to celebrate the 4th of July, we at Vegan America are taking this moment to reflect on what independence truly means - and how those values connect to the growing vegan movement in the United States.
The 4th of July marks the birth of a nation founded on ideals like liberty, justice, and the pursuit of a better life. These are not just political principles - they’re moral aspirations. And for many of us, those aspirations extend beyond human society to include animals, the environment, and future generations. The American story has always included those who challenge injustice, fight for the voiceless, and build something better. That spirit is alive and well in the vegan movement.

Veganism has a rich, if often overlooked, history in the U.S. Long before plant-based eating hit the mainstream, 19th-century abolitionists, suffragists, and transcendentalists promoted vegetarian ideals tied to nonviolence and compassion. In the 1970s, the rise of animal rights groups and environmental activism laid the groundwork for today’s plant-based revolution. And now, with over 9 million Americans identifying as vegan or vegetarian, and millions more exploring plant-forward lifestyles, the movement is firmly rooted in the American landscape.
One of the most iconic parts of Independence Day is the BBQ. But just like America itself, BBQ is evolving. From smoky vegan ribs made with seitan to juicy Beyond and Impossible burgers, today’s cookouts are proving you don’t need animal products to enjoy classic summer flavors. Dishes like grilled corn with vegan butter, jackfruit pulled “pork,” and watermelon-feta (made with plant-based feta!) are showing up at more and more gatherings. Vegan BBQ is not just possible—it’s delicious, ethical, and deeply satisfying.
