Leather and suede are still standard across many popular brands, often sourced from cowhide. But it doesn’t stop there — traditional glues often use collagen from animal bones or milk protein (casein), and some dyes and finishes rely on animal ingredients like cochineal (insects) or shellac.

The market itself is massive. The global vegan footwear market is already valued around $48 billion in 2024, expected to cross $83 billion by 2033. Flip-flops alone accounted for nearly $20 billion last year, with projections pointing toward $29 billion by the end of the decade. Sandals — whether fashion-forward or functional — remain a top choice for everyday wear, and the demand for vegan alternatives is rising fast as consumers prioritize ethics alongside comfort and design.

Flip-flops, in particular, dominate travel and casual fashion thanks to brands like Havaianas, which sells over 200 million pairs annually. While many flip-flops are made from rubber or foam, some styles sneak in leather or animal-based dyes. Even products labeled “synthetic” may include adhesives derived from animals unless clearly labeled as vegan. That’s why it’s important to look closely at every material — from the lining to the glue.
