What Is a Tofu Press?

Tofu has been a cornerstone of plant-based diets for over 2,000 years. Traditionally made from soybeans, tofu is rich in protein, iron, and calcium, making it a favorite among vegans, vegetarians, and health-conscious eaters. In the U.S. alone, tofu sales have steadily grown, with the market expected to surpass $800 million annually by 2027. But did you know tofu can also be made from other legumes like chickpeas, black beans, or lentils? These alternatives are growing in popularity, especially among those with soy sensitivities or simply looking to try something new.
There are several tofu types, each suited for different dishes: silken (great for smoothies and desserts), soft (ideal for soups), firm (perfect for stir-fries), and extra-firm (best for grilling or frying). The tofu-making process is simple yet fascinating. Legumes are soaked, ground, and cooked, then filtered to produce milk. A coagulant - often calcium sulfate - is added to the milk, causing it to curdle. The curds are then pressed into solid white (or sometimes beige or tan) blocks, which become the tofu we all know and love.
But here’s the secret to elevating your tofu game: the tofu press. This handy kitchen tool removes excess water from tofu, dramatically improving its texture and allowing it to better absorb marinades and spices. Whether you're aiming for crispy tofu cubes, savory skewers, or meaty plant-based sandwiches, pressing your tofu beforehand is the key. Without a press, tofu often stays watery and bland - but with one, it becomes flavorful and satisfying.
At Vegan America, we believe in making plant-based living easier, tastier, and more enjoyable. That’s why you’ll now find tofu presses available in our marketplace, along with a growing list of kitchen tools, pantry staples, and lifestyle essentials designed to support your plant-based journey.
