Each year, trillions of sea animals - yes, trillions - are killed for human consumption. Most of them are never counted individually, but lumped together by the ton, erasing their lives from our consciousness. Fishing, especially industrial trawling, is not only devastating to marine biodiversity - itâs one of the leading contributors to habitat destruction, species extinction, and oceanic âdead zones.â
Over 40% of all fish caught arenât even eaten by humans. They're discarded as âbycatchâ - unwanted turtles, dolphins, sharks, and other sea life killed in the process. Meanwhile, climate change and ocean warming are rapidly accelerating due to the carbon footprint of commercial fishing and the destruction of carbon-absorbing habitats like seagrass beds and coral reefs.
But the impact doesnât stop at the ocean. Industrial fishing vessels burn enormous amounts of fossil fuels, and overfishing is collapsing marine ecosystems that billions of people depend on for food security and climate regulation.
